Hegoa leaves X and joins Bluesky
On 14 February, the Board of Directors of Hegoa, the Institute for Studies on Development and International Cooperation, took the decision to leave the social media platform X.
As an entity committed to critical thought and the promotion of knowledge aimed at transformations rooted in social justice, solidarity, equity and plurality, we feel that the social media platform X—under the leadership of Elon Musk—has become a tool for promoting a vision of society and a set of values that are at odds with those held and promoted by Hegoa.
“The evidence of algorithm manipulation, the lack of quality and rigour in the information shared and the ability to spread and amplify ‘fake news’ with no ethical oversight have turned X (formerly Twitter) into a platform that enables the large-scale spread of messages that violate human rights and contravene fundamental freedoms; that is used as a tool for disinformation campaigns; and that facilitates the expansion of far-right discourse and policies around the world.”
In light of the above and in line with our values, Hegoa feels morally obliged to leave X and explore other social media platforms that will allow it to meet its goals. For the time being, we are happy to announce that we have opened an account on Bluesky (@hegoainstitutua.bsky.social),where you’ll be able to follow us from now on.
