International meeting between women human rights defenders from the Global South and diaspora activists in Euskadi
On 28 June 2024, Hegoa hosted a conference for women human rights defenders from the Global South and exiled female activists and refugees in the Basque Country from countries affected by violent conflicts and impunity.
The aim of the conference, which was held in the Biscay Women’s Assembly in Bilbao and attended by 25 women from different organisations and collectives, was to serve as a space for reflection, dialogue and collective creation on human rights issues.
In addition to presenting an analysis of the local and global outlook, the experience and results of three previous conferences held by Hegoa between 2023 and 2024 in collaboration with other organisations—which took place in Central America and the Basque Country—were also shared. These events addressed key issues in the ongoing battle for truth, justice and reparation for victims of serious human rights violations, such as sexual violence, enforced disappearance and international mechanisms for fighting impunity.
The attendees sought to identify shared concerns, agendas and strategies that link human rights groups from the Global South and diasporas from countries in conflict who are currently living in the Basque Country.
