'Climática' and 'Pikara Magazine': two new magazines available in the Hegoa Newspaper and Periodical Library
The Newspaper and Periodical Library at the Hegoa Documentation Centre (EHU) offers two new publications to interested readers: Climática and Pikara Magazine. The Newspaper and Periodical Library is one of the many learning, teaching and research resources offered by the Hegoa Institute.
Climática is a media outlet specialising in reporting on and raising awareness about the climate and biodiversity crisis, its causes and its consequences. It was created in 2019 by the MásPúblico cooperative, which also publishes La Marea.
In addition to publishing a digital magazine and an annual print edition, Climática has launched other initiatives, such as La Uni Climática, a monthly reading club, as well as workshops and meetings, both virtual and in person.
The second publication is Pikara Magazine, a project by the non-profit worker cooperative EME Komunikazioa, based in Bilbao. Created in 2010, this media outlet addresses a range of social, political and cultural issues from a feminist perspective. As explained on its website, Pikara “is committed to quality journalism, with a feminist, critical, transgressive and enjoyable approach”.
The Hegoa Library has for some time offered other materials published by Pikara, such as the book Feminismos. Miradas desde la diversidad (2019) or the monograph Energiak (2020).
An extensive catalogue
Hegoa’s Newspaper and Periodical Library currently holds 217 collections in Spanish, Basque, French and English. It contains journals dating back to 1979, such as Nueva Sociedad; to 1981, such as the Nicaraguan journal Envío; and to 1987, such as the Journal of Modern African Studies.
During the last academic year, two journals were also added: Postcolonial Studies (Taylor & Francis Group) which focuses on analysing, from an interdisciplinary perspective, the ways in which colonial relations and processes shaped and continue to shape the world order, and Gender Issues (Springer), which publishes political, economic and social analyses that assess the impact of economic, legal, political and social changes on gender identity and gender relations.
Alongside these additions, we would like to highlight the following titles: Alternatives Humanitaires/Humanitarian Alternatives; Ecología Política - Cuadernos de Debate Internacional; Gender & Development; Revista de Economía Mundial; The European Journal of Development Research; Le Monde Diplomatic; Nueva Sociedad; Papeles de Relaciones Ecosociales y Cambio Global and the Journal of Refugee Studies.
