Would you like to train in emancipatory education?
In today’s complex society characterised by multiple crises deriving from the hegemonic system (capitalist, heteropatriarchal, extractivist, colonial, etc.), ‘emancipatory education’ is the term used to describe all the pedagogical initiatives aimed at driving a just and sustainable social transformation with life at the centre.
Emancipatory education incorporates a political dimension into its objectives and strategic proposals for social transformation. It reaches beyond awareness-raising, cooperation and education initiatives that take place solely within formal school institutions. It incorporates processes of critical consciousness (in line with Paulo Freire’s approach), enabling students to develop strategies for political action and initiate alternative experiences that challenge the hegemonic system.
One of the Hegoa Institute's postgraduate programmes is the Permanent Training Master’s in International Cooperation and Emancipatory Education, a fully-online degree which allows students to delve into these subject matters. This specialised course equips participants with the tools they need to develop transformative pedagogical initiatives, drawing from critical, popular, feminist, internationalist, ecological and decolonial pedagogies.
To this end, the course proposes overcoming the North-South and cooperation-education dichotomies that have dominated the education and international cooperation landscape, drawing on the experiences of social movements and entities such as transformative NGOs.
Through this postgraduate programme, students are equipped with the tools required to design and implement educational initiatives that seek to bring about social transformation, with a focus on social and environmental justice.
The Permanent Training Master’s in International Cooperation and Emancipatory Education is coordinated by the Hegoa Institute and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). It includes the possibility of undertaking extracurricular work placements.
The online pre-registration window opens on 22 May.
