Summer course: Gaza and Colombia. Hunger as a weapon of war, food security as a path to peace (Donostia, 8 and 9 September)

The use of hunger as a weapon of war has been a persistent tactic throughout history. Food insecurity and the lack of access to essential services have been shown to play a critical role in the proliferation of violence and conflict. Since 2015, global hunger has continued to rise, with acute food insecurity posing a particularly serious challenge. According to the most recent figures (2023), it affects 282 million people, at least 60% of whom live in areas of conflict and extreme violence.

Through the “TopaGune” format, the course will feature facilitators specialised in citizen participation, giving it a highly participatory and collaborative focus. This summer course offers participants a thorough, accessible and action-oriented analysis, encouraging active involvement from public institutions (at international, national, regional and local levels), academia, students, civil society and the general public.

Aims

To disseminate the nature, significance, dynamics and drivers of the relationship between conflict and hunger, and the contribution of food security to peacebuilding through the analysis of the cases of Palestine and Colombia. The desired outcome is to broaden visibility and understanding of this issue for a diverse audience in a meticulous yet accessible and constructive way.

To raise awareness among a broad range of institutions and, above all, to highlight possible ways to contribute both to preventing the use of hunger as a weapon of war and to promoting peacebuilding through food security (across public, academic and civil society sectors). The ultimate aim is to increase their involvement in the prevention and mitigation of hunger caused by violence and in the promotion of peace, each from their own perspective and adding value.
