Progress and setbacks in the work to combat enforced disappearance

The Seminar on Enforced Disappearance to reflect on the advances and setbacks in the work to combat enforced disappearance will be held in Bilbao (Basoko Etxea, Sarriko) on 2 December.

The seminar will be based on the experience and analysis of relatives of victims of this crime against humanity. It will also include contributions from specialists who accompany this type of process from different fields (legal, psycho-social and forensic) and in different countries.

This seminar is organised by Hegoa, the Institute for Development Studies and International Cooperation (UPV/EHU), with funding from eLankidetza-Basque Agency for Cooperation and Solidarity.

9:30. Roundtable 1. Relatives who are searching and demanding justice

  • Alejandra Cabrera. Daughter of a father who disappeared in Guatemala and human rights defender. Association of Relatives of the Detained-Disappeared of Guatemala (FAMDEGUA).
  • Gloria Guzmán. Daughter of a mother, father and brother who disappeared in El Salvador and human rights defender. Hegoa Institute (University of the Basque Country/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea).

11:30. Roundtable 2.  Assessment of advances and setbacks in the work to combat enforced disappearance based on the experience of accompanying victims.

  • David Morales. Coordinator of the Transitional Justice area of the organisation Cristosal (El Salvador), plaintiff in the case of the El Mozote Massacre and in cases of enforced disappearance.
  • Carlos Martín Beristain. Member of the Advisory Commission of the Colombian National Search System and of the International Investigation Group in the Ayotzinapa case.
  • Francisco Etxeberria y Lourdes Herrasti. Forensic Anthropology Team of the Aranzadi Science Society.
