Sign up, participate, add up. I Critical University Extension Conference

Registration is now open for the 1st Conference on Critical University Extension: Challenges of the University-Society articulation to move towards eco-social transformation. The Conference will be held on 23 and 24 May 2024 at the University of Granada.

This event is part of the Critical University Extension project promoted by Hegoa, thanks to the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID according to the Spanish initials) funds.

The university has three main functions: teaching, research and university extension. An exploratory diagnosis of university extension held in 8 Spanish universities revealed that there is no consensus on what this function of “university extension” does (or does not) entail. There is also no clear guidelines or objectives, according to the research. As a result, the university extension is "a disputed terrain" mainly captured by mercantilist interests.

Critical University Extension (CUE) appears as an alternative to combat this reality. In order to learn about the CUE proposals developed in different parts of Latin America, the conference programme includes a speech of Humberto Tommasino, the Co-Coordinator of the Working Group on Critical University Extension of the Latin American Committee of Social Sciences (CLACSO in Spanish).

In addition, the event includes a space of dialogue to analyse feminist, anti-racist and anti-militarist proposals and their contributions to the CUE. The colloquium will be held between Florencia Brizuela, a member of the Anti-racist Legal Network, and Diana Granados, a feminist anthropologist from the University of Cauca (Colombia). 

Other activities planned for the conference include a live radio programme with Carne Cruda, which will combine interviews and live music to explore in an entertaining way the role of the University in the face of today's society challenges.

Registration for the conference is free of charge. The registration period will remain open until 15 May.
